Auctions Seen Ending Strong, Shortages in China Key Factor, Garment Prices Moving Higher, Consumer Confidence Inches Up

THE SEASON’S FINAL ROUND OF AUCTION SALES GETS UNDER WAY NEXT SATURDAY IN COPENHAGEN AND THE STAGE APPEARS TO BE SET FOR A STRONG WINDUP TO THIS YEAR’S STEADY RISE IN MINK PRICES.With the big Chinese factories already running at near-capacity – well in advance of the retail season in that country – and reporting shortages in their skin supplies, a crowded salesroom is anticipated and the last-chance factor is expected to weigh heavily on buyers’ price considerations. Although the offering at Kopenhagen Fur is large – 4.6 million pelts – it is a typical end-of-season collection with a reduced number of regular-quality goods.

A SIMILAR SITUATION IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP A FEW DAYS LATER, WHEN FINNISH FUR SALES HOLDS ITS SEASON-ENDER AND PULLS IN MANY OF THE SAME BUYERS AND POSSIBLY A FEW MORE RUSSIANS. The latter still show a preference for the longer-haired Finnish mink, while the Chinese and others have been attracted by the growing proportion of short-napped pelts in the Danish collections. In addition to mink, this also will be the final sale of blue and other foxes, which also have been in strong demand.
